AMP 2013!

Men and women interested in representing Philadelphia as part of AMP 2013 should email for more information and to get on the tryout email list; please include some background on your playing history in your email. AMP values talented players and who fit together on and off the field: constructive teammates who make their team better when under pressure, enjoy the game, and challenge one another to improve.

In the early season AMP will be working with Bitmap, Philly’s newest mixed team, with opportunities for developing players and veterans looking to play structured and fun, team-focused ultimate. Bitmap represented well at Philly Invite, Chesapeake, and Sectionals in their first season, last year; email for more detail.

AMP’s pre-season team workouts will be held April 6th, 13th and 27th, before tryouts begin with practices on May 4th and 11th, June 1st and 8th, and July 13th and 14th – dates are still preliminary and could include some Sundays in place of Saturday sessions. Tryout tournaments will include PADA’s Bell Crack Classic in Kennett Square, PA on May 18-19, as well as Poultry Days in Versailles, OH on June 15-16, and Charm City Classic in Baltimore, MD [dates TBD].

After the roster is announced AMP will host the USAU Pro-Elite Challenge at Philly Invite in July, travel to the USAU Elite-Select Challenge in Seattle, WA in August as well as WAFC’s Chesapeake event before starting the club series in September.

San FrAMPcisco

Just a week after Chesapeake, AMP made our second-ever trip to San Francisco for the Mixed Labor Day tournament [actually held inland at UC Davis]. Most of the team arrived a day early and enjoyed Friday visiting the city: the Sutro Baths, Golden Gate Bridge, Mission and downtown.

Summer Tournament News

We are overdue on tournament updates as AMP has been in action at Chesapeake, Labor Day, Founders’ Secitonals and Mid-Atlantic Regionals. At each tournament AMP has grown more confident, filling our roles individually and expressing our unique character as a group through our play on the field as a team, and off the field at our many team meals, car rides, workouts and get togethers.

Boston and Philly Invite

After our first two major tournaments of the season, the roster is determined and AMP 2012 is starting to come into form. Our annual June trip to Devens, Massachusetts featured a series of close wins and losses as we worked players into different roles and tested strategies developed on the field during our June practices. The team rebounded well, physically and mentally, from a mistake-filled loss to Ghost on Saturday, to start putting things together by the end of the tournament. Our weekend culminated in a comprehensive team performance against Montreal’s Odyssee featuring our women in especially prominent roles: Katie Erikson threw three 3 goals while Raha, Jill and Kelly had clutch Ds. On the mens side, Bulb caught 4 scores and assisted on 2 others.

AMP gained more experience playing tight games a few weeks later at our home tournament in Allentown. The first round against DBJ went to universe point after both teams held leads, with AMP winning on D. Andrea, Melanie, Melissa, Bulb and Matt Zumbrum all scored twice. Raha had 3 goals and Matt Zumbrum 3 takeaways. Round two against Gotham Gigante was a more comfortable 13-8 win featuring 2 Ds from Andrea and Steve Ng each and 3 assists from Alex Peters. The following round was another universe point win, 15-14 over two-time Nationals qualifier Overhaul, behind 4 goals each from Raha and Furf. AMP finished Saturday with a win over Renegade and then completed the sweep of the pool Sunday morning, beating Muffin.

In the semifinals against 7Express, AMP started well with a break off a D from Raha and score from Alex to Billy. 7X broke back to take a 2-1 lead and went into half up 1 break. With several stoppages and some especially long points, the game was capped early and both teams traded out in the second half for an 11-9 7Express win. AMP again broke first in the 3rd place game, but lost concentration going into half against Wild Card, trailing 8-6 at half for the second game in a row. The team failed to regoup at the start of the second and lost 14-8. Both Philly and Boston Invites showed our team’s potential at our best, and room to improve – good motivation for the work ahead in August.

Sandblast 2012

Though unfortunately not an official team event, several current and former AMP players and friends represented Philly on the beach at Chicago’s Sandblast. “Ampersand” lost a close game to the eventual champions in the Saturday crossover, but won out on Sunday to finish 9th out of 64 teams.

Beth Coltman to Bell Crack

Following a scrimmage, two open workouts and a pre-season trip to the Beth Coltman Memorial Tournament this April, AMP’s 2012 season officially kicked off as tryouts started at Saturday’s first practice. We continue to welcome new players next weekend and in early June. Cuts and invites to continue will follow weekly as we put together our team to compete at Bell Crack, shape a development team to begin playing in June and start to determine AMP’s final roster for a debut at Boston Invite. 8th in the Nation

Thanks Five Ultimate for the nice team picture, this after our 2-1 finish on Thursday in Sarasota.

AMP finished the 2011 club season by representing Philadelphia at the 2011 Club Championships. With continued improvement from last year, the team returned to the National quarterfinals for the fifth time, and first since 2009. With a roster featuring just 6 players in common between the 09 and 2011 campaigns, the team has truly rebuilt its core, with greater depth and flexibility, to compete for a national championship in 2012 and beyond.
