Summer Tournament News

We are overdue on tournament updates as AMP has been in action at Chesapeake, Labor Day, Founders’ Secitonals and Mid-Atlantic Regionals. At each tournament AMP has grown more confident, filling our roles individually and expressing our unique character as a group through our play on the field as a team, and off the field at our many team meals, car rides, workouts and get togethers.

Chesapeake Invite felt very much like our season debut, breaking out our 2012 jerseys for the first time and facing a schedule filled with Nationals contenders, though still experimenting a bit with what roles and strategy would fit the team best in the series. Our goals were to execute our practiced strategies, support each other with an active sideline, and continue to improve throughout the weekend.

Saturday showed our potential and some inconsistency. Starting off with JMU alums Ant Madness, we took an early lead, gave back our breaks, and bore down on defense late to pull out a universe point victory – Katie Erikson featuring prominently with 4 assists, while Jesse Gormley had 2 Ds, 1 goal and 1 assist in just 2 points played. Round 2 featured Atlanta’s Bucket, a rematch of the 2011 Club Championship Pre-Quarters game, and early on we brought the same skill and intensity which led to our success a season prior, capitalizing on short turnovers to take a commanding half-time lead. In the second half our defense waned and Bucket made a run for a 13-10 victory despite 3 assists and 2 scores from Alex Peters. Coming off that disappointment we failed to focus early on against Ghost, conceding the pull play on our first D point of the game, then dropping the ensuing pull for an early 0-2 deficit. The team refocused though and produced our best game of the season so far, breaking back on D and fighting off several zone and man looks on O to take the lead, before falling late once again, 11-13. Raha led the way with 2 scores and 3 assists, but was injured early in our next game, the crossover against Santa Maria from Columbus, Ohio. However, the team was able to maintain our strong play from the Ghost game to win 13-9, Billy Olli featuring with 2 Ds and Jessie Morris with 2 scores.

Sunday morning pre-quarters featured a rematch from the Philly Invite semis with New York’s 7Express and our full team effort delivered a very satisfying 10-7 victory. Matt Zumbrum and Dan Furfari scored twice. Alex scored 2, threw 3 goals and had 2 take-aways while Matt Paparone had 5 Ds! The following game against Slow White we generated several turnovers early in the game, but could not convert and gave up several breaks before half, falling 13-8 to the tournament’s eventual losing finalists. The score was the same in our consolation round loss to Overhaul, though Andrew Baill scored 5 times between the last two games. A bit unsatisfied, the team finished the weekend with rounds of sprints, ab exercises and SpikeBall, eager to get back on the field a week later in California.
