Boston and Philly Invite

After our first two major tournaments of the season, the roster is determined and AMP 2012 is starting to come into form. Our annual June trip to Devens, Massachusetts featured a series of close wins and losses as we worked players into different roles and tested strategies developed on the field during our June practices. The team rebounded well, physically and mentally, from a mistake-filled loss to Ghost on Saturday, to start putting things together by the end of the tournament. Our weekend culminated in a comprehensive team performance against Montreal’s Odyssee featuring our women in especially prominent roles: Katie Erikson threw three 3 goals while Raha, Jill and Kelly had clutch Ds. On the mens side, Bulb caught 4 scores and assisted on 2 others.

AMP gained more experience playing tight games a few weeks later at our home tournament in Allentown. The first round against DBJ went to universe point after both teams held leads, with AMP winning on D. Andrea, Melanie, Melissa, Bulb and Matt Zumbrum all scored twice. Raha had 3 goals and Matt Zumbrum 3 takeaways. Round two against Gotham Gigante was a more comfortable 13-8 win featuring 2 Ds from Andrea and Steve Ng each and 3 assists from Alex Peters. The following round was another universe point win, 15-14 over two-time Nationals qualifier Overhaul, behind 4 goals each from Raha and Furf. AMP finished Saturday with a win over Renegade and then completed the sweep of the pool Sunday morning, beating Muffin.

In the semifinals against 7Express, AMP started well with a break off a D from Raha and score from Alex to Billy. 7X broke back to take a 2-1 lead and went into half up 1 break. With several stoppages and some especially long points, the game was capped early and both teams traded out in the second half for an 11-9 7Express win. AMP again broke first in the 3rd place game, but lost concentration going into half against Wild Card, trailing 8-6 at half for the second game in a row. The team failed to regoup at the start of the second and lost 14-8. Both Philly and Boston Invites showed our team’s potential at our best, and room to improve – good motivation for the work ahead in August.
